At the cost of doing what you want to do someone else's way, or being unable to do it at all. *nix puts the hack back into hacking. You get as much, or as little control as you like, and if you're using open source, you can create your own customized solution by building upon the work of others. And here's the cool part: It is stunning just how fasst some of that old hardware can be when you don't have to run a gui to make the software work. Take the time to learn an *nix variant.
